Welcome to Southwater Cricket Club
Cricket has been played in the village since the mid 19th Century and, on formation, the Club's first game on the ground in Church Lane (next to the Village Hall) was played in June 1890. 'Friendly matches' were arranged with similar clubs in Sussex and Surrey and this type of fixture still continues to be played on Sundays.
In 1982 Southwater became a founder member of the Horsham & District Village League, winning the Trophy in 1983 and 1986. A league for 2nd XIs was formed in 1992 and Southwater were Champions in 1995 and 1996.
Since 1997, on Saturdays, the Club competed in the Sussex Invitation League with the 1st XI winning the 2nd Division in 2008 to be promoted to the 1st Division of the new West Sussex Invitation League. In 2009 the team finished runner-up to Broadwater and in 2010 beat Serendib CC in the final of the WSICL Sunday Cup. In 2011 the team won the Mirfield Cup, a mid-week evening competition. The 2nd XI won their SICL division in 1998, 1999 and 2007. In the new WSICL the team won the 2nd Division in 2009 and the following year in the restructured league, as runner-up, gained promotion to the new Division 4.
A Colts section was established in 1987 and currently 5 teams compete in the Identilam Colts Cricket League. The Under 16s won their league in 2005 and the Under 12s were similarly successful in 2007.
Since the formation of Southwater Football Club in 1958 strong links with the two sports have existed and, in order to maximise the social benefits of a communal clubhouse, 1984 saw the formation of Southwater Sports Club to manage the premises and day to day business. The former cricket pavilion was demolished and replaced by a clubhouse which, following further improvements, now incorporates two bars offering a comprehensive range of drinks, a function room, modern catering facilities and changing rooms for players and officials. Other sporting interests, both indoors and outdoors, receive full consideration and social functions are a regular feature.
The Club is always keen to welcome newcomers of all ages and ability and potential new members are invited to contact Club Chairman, David Ball (Tel. 01403 252521) for further details
